Gum pains, dental plaques: Fish oil for periodontal disease

Periodontal disease is a gum disease that is primarily caused by aging. What begins with gingivitis leads to periodontitis if left untreated. Treatments for periodontal disease are unpleasant, expensive and rather, difficult. This is because periodontal inflammation is caused by bacteria that attack the gums. Since it involves the gums, periodontal disease can be extremely painful too. It is characterized by inflammation in the gums, dental plaques and poor oral hygiene.

Causes of periodontal disease: Lack of oral hygiene and irregular teeth cleaning can lead to dental plaques like periodontal diseases. Sometimes bad habits or hobbies can also affect the gums. The common causes of periodontal diseases are

  • Use of tobacco/smoking
  • Excessive use of medications
  • Physical & mental stress
  • Diabetes
  • Poor diet or unhealthy food habits

Additionally, the bacteria that cause periodontal disease thrive in acidic environments. Thus, eating sugars and foods that raise the acidity in the mouth also increases bacterial counts.

Symptoms of periodontal disease: Periodontal is not an easy to bear disease. It can be difficult for the patient who has infected/affected gums. Symptoms of the disease include:

  • Swelling in the gums
  • Bleeding while brushing
  • Halitosis or bad breath
  • Bitter taste in the mouth
  • Formation of pus between teeth and gums
  • Tooth abscess
  • Tender gums that are painless
  • Loss of bone tissue between teeth and gums

Fish oil for periodontal disease: Though periodontal is not a critical condition, the major risk involved is loss of one’s teeth. This can be an awful experience especially if you are too young to lose your teeth. Doctors recommend omega 3 fish oil supplements for treating the condition. They say that omega 3s  can reduce periodontal disease in older individuals. Fish oil can be a great antidote to the disease, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. A study in Japan revealed that the elderly with low levels of DHA have been more susceptible to gum disease.

Since periodontal is an inflammatory condition, adequate amount of DHA and omega 3s can minimize inflammation and set things right. Periodontal disease is also a risk factor for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease. So, it is better to treat the condition before it collapses other systems of the body.

Treatment of periodontal disease:
Treatment is a possibility, but more than that, one needs to prevent periodontal infection. Before taking up fish oil, you need to go for regular check ups with your dentist and express your interest in trying omega 3 supplements. Then, you can go ahead with a regime of high quality omega 3 fish oil supplements or capsules based on the advice of your dentist. If you already have dental plaques or other dental illnesses, you need to treat them first and then, move on to periodontal disease. Dental cleaning is also required for prevention of periodontal disease. Fish oil with regular dental check-ups, cleaning and good oral hygiene can avoid periodontitis.
