Types of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

There are 3 types of Omerga-3 Fatty Acids:

    1. elcosapentaenoic acid (“EPA”),
    2. docosahexaenoic acid (“DHA”), and
    3. alpha-linolenic acid (“ALA”).

EPA and DHA are found mainly in cold water fish and are the two most frequently studied and most strongly linked to potential health benefits. DHA is the only Omega-3 that supports brain, eye, and heart health throughout all stages of life.

ALA is found in plant sources.

Each form of Omega-3 Fatty Acid is absorbed by your body in different ways.

ELCOSAPENTAENOIC ACID (“EPA”) and DOCOSAHEXAENOIC ACID (“DHA”), unlike ALA, are readily absorbed into your body and put to use immediately.

ALPHA-LINOLENIC ACID (“ALA”) from the plant is converted by enzymes in your liver into EPA, and DHA to a lesser extent. According to Penny Kris-Etherton Ph.D., a professor of nutrition at Pennsylvania State University, this process of conversion by your liver is inefficient because only about 5% of the ALA is converted to EPA.
