Fish oil alternatives: Why Omega 9 fatty acids score high

Omega 9 are fatty acids which are called unsaturated fats, also known as oleic acid. Omega 9 is an essential fatty acid like omega-3 and omega 6, which is very crucial for proper functioning of the bodily systems. Since the body can produce only small amounts of essential fatty acids, we need to take these unsaturated fats only via food. Lack of omega 9 in food is a result of low intake of nutritional diet and reduced levels of other essential fatty acids.

Omega 9 Fatty Acids – What are they about?
Why is omega-9 important? What is its crucial role in the body? How much amount of omega-9 does fish oil contain? Omega-9 fatty acids include two major fatty acids called “stearic acid” and “oleic acid”. Stearic acid is a saturated fat which can be converted to oleic acid which is mono-unsaturated. Oleic acid is a fatty acid that is found in abundance in nature. It can even be produced by glands of the skin. A few fruits/vegetables which have omega-9 in them are avocados, cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, olives, pecans, pistachios and others.

Omega 9 is a great alternative to fish oil or when there is lack of omega 3 and omega 6. When our body does not have enough omega 3-s and omega 6-s, these omega 9-s try to compensate by supplying the adequate nutrition. Oleic acid or omega 9 is an essential fatty acid when our body has less essential fatty acids.

Health benefits of omega 9: Omega 9 is important to the body in more ways than one. Some of the benefits are:

  • It reduces cholesterol levels and thereby, reduces risk of heart attack or cardiovascular diseases
  • Prevents and minimizes the severity of atherosclerosis
  • Helps diabetic patients by maintaining glucose levels in the blood
  • Strengthens immune system and reduces anti-inflammatory effects in the body
  • Protects against cancer and several other diseases

Lack of Omega 9: Lack of omega 9 or oleic acid can reduce the risk of  cardiovascular disease and stroke. It is also believed that using fatty acids regulates cholesterol levels and improves immune system. Lack of omega 9 can lead to several illnesses or conditions like skin disorders, pain in the joints and lack of sound health. Omega 9 deficiency can lead to rashes, hair loss, joint pain and infertility or impotency.

Side effects of Omega 9: Omega 9 fatty acids do not incur many side effects. Since it has anticoagulants or anti-platelet agents, intake of too much of omega 9 can increase risk of bleeding.  So, consult a health professional before you take omega 9 doses.
