Fish Oil is a generic term for the different types of Omega-3 Fatty Acids that are found, primarily, in various fish.  Omega-3 Fatty Acids are polyunsaturated fats which means that Omega-3 Fatty Acids do not cause plaque build up in arteries that can lead to heart disease. Acccording to the American Heart Association, polyunsaturated fats help lower the risk of heart disease by increasing the high-density lipoprotein (“LDL”) cholesterol or “good” cholesterol.

In order for your body to produce healthy cells, your body needs Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats according to the American Heart Association.  The American Heart Association also states that Omega-3 and Omega-6 are crucial for normal growth and development of your body.  However, your body is unable to produce Omega-6 and Omega-3 fats.  Polyunsaturated fats provide your body with these essential fats that your body is not able to produce itself.

This discovery came from learning that the Inuit people of Greenland had a very low rate of heart disease. In fact, heart disease was virtually non-existent in the Inuit people. This was intriging because the typical diet of the Inuit people was whale meat and seal meat which are high in cholesterol and high in fat. Subsequent studies found that 2 Omega-3 Fatty Acids were predominant in those cold water fish were also predominant in the Inuit people and probably in their blood protecting their heart. Furhter studies have found that to be true but are still unsure if the heart benefits are solely from Omega-3 Fatty Acids or from some other element working in combination with Omega-3 Fatty Acids.

Found primarily in cold water fish, Omega-3 Fatty Acids are also found in some plant life (vegetables, nuts, and seeds).
